Description
Delicious homemade hot cross buns, perfect for Easter or any cozy morning. Soft, spiced dough with a traditional cross and a sweet glaze.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet instant yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup mixed dried fruits (such as raisins, currants, and sultanas)
- For the cross: 1/2 cup all-purpose flour and enough water to make a thick paste
- For the glaze: 1/4 cup apricot jam
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, instant yeast, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Warm the milk and butter together until melted, then allow the mixture to cool slightly.
- Combine the warmed milk and eggs with the dry ingredients to create a dough.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 7-10 minutes until it’s smooth.
- Incorporate the mixed dried fruits by kneading them into the dough until evenly distributed.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place until it’s double in size—about 1 hour.
- Once risen, punch down the dough, divide it into 12 equal pieces, shape them into buns, and arrange them on a baking sheet.
- For the cross, combine 1/2 cup of flour with just enough water to form a thick paste. Use a piping bag or a ziplock with the corner snipped off to pipe crosses on each bun.
- Let the buns rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the buns for 20-25 minutes until they are golden brown.
- Brush warm buns with melted apricot jam for a lovely glaze.
