- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Gooey mozzarella cheese (for stuffing)
- Freshly chopped rosemary (optional, for flavor twist)
- Grated Parmesan cheese (for enhanced flavor)
- Flaky sea salt (to top)
Instructions
- Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Mix the flour and salt into the yeast mixture; stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let the dough rise in a greased bowl, covered, for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Shape the dough into 12 equal pieces, stuff each with mozzarella, and shape into pretzels.
- Boil water and baking soda, then gently add pretzels; boil for 30 seconds on each side.
- Prepare the pretzels on a lined baking sheet, brushing with egg wash and sprinkling with herbs, cheese, and salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
Serve warm with mustard, cheese sauce, or marinara. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
