Description
Crispy, golden onion ring chips that bring diner-style flavor to your kitchen. Perfect for snacks or gatherings!
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large onions (yellow or white)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 egg
- 1 cup buttermilk (or milk)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
- Peel the onions and slice them into thin rings, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Whisk together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and pepper until well combined in a medium bowl.
- Mix the egg and buttermilk together in another bowl.
- Incorporate the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Don’t over-mix; it should remain a little lumpy for optimal texture.
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Dip a handful of onion rings into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated.
- Carefully place the battered onion rings into the hot oil, frying them in batches for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Remove the onion chips with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Sprinkle with extra salt while still hot for maximum flavor.
Notes
For extra crunch, consider double dipping the onion rings in the batter before frying. Serve with various dipping sauces for added fun!
